Thermal Response to Tropical Cyclones Over the Kuroshio

چکیده

The sea surface temperature (SST) and enthalpy flux response to tropical cyclones (TCs) in the Kuroshio are investigated using 18-year observational datasets. statistical results show that maximum TC-induced SST cooling its occurrence time, recovery spatial patterns of anomaly, anomaly between warm core eddies (WCEs) typical oceanic water (i.e., eddy-free Kuroshio-free, TOW) varies considerably. Specifically, suppresses more so than WCE. can make occur approximately half a day sooner WCE TOW. time is also shorter presence pronounced with increasing reduction. Compared cold wake TOW, composited decrease exhibits long strip width 2° Kuroshio, rather having circular distribution as In period, negative propagates leftward slowly under TOW conditions, whereas shifts rightward gradually condition. Similarly, air-to-sea which moves These emphasize impact on cyclone-induced cannot be ignored.

The Role of Tropical Cyclones in Precipitation Over the Tropical and Subtropical North America

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are essential elements of the hydrological cycle in tropical and subtropical regions. In the present study, the contribution of TCs to seasonal precipitation around the tropical and subtropical North America is examined. When TC activity over the tropical eastern Pacific (TEP) or the Intra Americas Seas (IAS) is below (abovenormal), regional precipitation may be below (a...

The Dynamics of Tropical Cyclones

The specific objectives of the current effort are: 1. To continue our study of the dynamical processes in tropical cyclones responsible for looping or erratic motion; 2. To continue the development of methods for (a) the introduction of synthetic tropical-cyclone-scale vortices in operational forecast models and (b) ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclones; 3. To continue a sensitivity study o...

Clouds in Tropical Cyclones

Clouds within the inner regions of tropical cyclones are unlike those anywhere else in the atmosphere. Convective clouds contributing to cyclogenesis have rotational and deep intense updrafts but tend to have relatively weak downdrafts. Within the eyes of mature tropical cyclones, stratus clouds top a boundary layer capped by subsidence. An outward-sloping eyewall cloud is controlled by adjustm...

Targeted Observation of Tropical Cyclones

The advance in targeted observations of tropical cyclone movement is reviewed in this article. The targeted observations from DOTSTAR (Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region) in understanding and improving the tropical cyclone track predictability is highlighted, along with the progress of the field program of THORPEX-PARC in the summer of 2008. The impact of...

Mesoscale Processes in Tropical Cyclones

I have four long-term goals. My first goal is to finalize the large body of work already carried out by the PI on the predictability of tropical cyclone (TC) forecast tracks out to 72 hours ahead. My second goal is to apply similar, as well as new, ideas to the predictability of forecast intensity out to 72 hours ahead. My third goal is to carry out observing system simulation experiments (OSSE...
